Video: Australian TV Busts The Saturated Fat/Cholesterol Myth

Published on November 4, 2013,

Strange times. Suddenly many of the arguments that we have featured on this site are being given coverage in the mainstream media. Let hope it is the start of a serious rethink of conventional wisdom on diet and health and, ideally, the start of more serious research into what’s really going on. The latest major piece was an investigation into cholesterol, low fat products and the pharmaceutical industry by Australian broadcaster ABC’s Catalyst programme…

Heart of the Matter Part 1 – Dietary Villains

Heart of the Matter Part 2 – Cholesterol Drug War

Here’s what the reporter Dr Maryanne Demasi says about he programme…

For decades we’ve been told that fat clogs your arteries and that high cholesterol causes heart disease. The food industry has complied with the messages of our peak health authorities and it has spawned a huge range of ‘fat free’ and ‘cholesterol free’ products that dominate our supermarket shelves.

Over the last 2 to 3 years, I have interviewed at least a hundred experts and patients worldwide about their views on diet, heart disease and medications to lower cholesterol.

It became obvious that there was a growing scepticism about the advice we have been given – with many saying that the links between cholesterol, saturated fat and heart disease haven’t been grounded in good science.

Through a mixture of politics, personality struggles and self preservation, we have put too much focus on saturated fat and cholesterol – which has led to millions of people believing that low fat diets and medication to lower cholesterol is the best treatment for heart disease.

In the first episode of this two part edition of Catalyst, I investigate the science behind the long established view that saturated fat causes heart disease by raising cholesterol.

In the second episode, I cut through the hype surrounding cholesterol lowering drugs and reveal the tactics used by Big Pharma to make the drugs to lower cholesterol appear more effective than they seem to be.

In Heart of the Matter, I investigate whether the role of saturated fat and cholesterol in heart disease is one of the biggest myths in medical history.

Video: The Talk the Food Industry Didn’t Want to See

Published on December 14, 2012,

The Diet Doctor has flagged up this superb 13 minute YouTube video from Dr Yoni Freedhoff who was first invited to give a talk to food industry representatives and then, at the last minute, disinvited…

The video cannot be shown at the moment. Please try again later.

The Diet Doctor describes it as follows:

So the food industry invited a doctor to give a talk at an industry breakfast. But three days before the talk, with his flights and hotels booked, they cancelled his talk. Why?

Well, I guess they suddenly realized that they had invited the wrong person. Dr Yoni Freedhoff is no fan of the food industry. Having already prepared his 13 minutes talk he recorded it and uploaded it to YouTube two days ago. Number of views so far: 160 000.

It’s a great talk. See it. Share it.
