Success Story: Healthier at Age 44 Than 24: How Joe Lost 115 Pounds and Turned His Life Around

Published on December 12, 2013,

Mark Sisson has a success story on his Mark’s Daily Apple blog from Joe who has lost a whole load of weight and feels much better since first hearing Gary Taubes give a talk in 2011 and then embarking on a low carb ketogenic diet. Here’s an extract of some of the benefits Joe has been experiencing…

My energy, sleep quality, every aspect of my health and day to day feeling, is as good or better now at age 44 as it was when I was 24. Everything…yes, EVERYTHING – and now I am spending 80% less time “exercising”.

When others ask me, these are my highlights of why I will continue a Primal, nutritional ketosis lifestyle, and why I recommend others try it:

  • Incredible, deep, restful sleep – my sleep improved early on before I lost much weight; now I usually get up without an alarm and I feel great.
  • Constant stream of energy throughout the day, regardless of the timing of my last meal…I usually fast 12 – 20 hours several times a week, usually before exercise – I recently did three hours of powerlifting and bicycling after a 20 hour fast…just to see if I could – I felt great.
  • Mental focus consistent through entire day regardless of meal timing.
  • I lost 115 pounds on the scale in about a year, but more importantly, I have lost over 12 inches off my waist size; I am back to the same college and high school clothing size.
  • My headaches/migraines are gone! I’m off medicines for them. The relief of living without headaches makes everything better and this alone would be enough for me to recommend Primal.

  • I can still enjoy wine with friends – I stopped drinking beer and mixed drinks with carbs, but continued red wine with meals and whisky or wine on social occasions.
  • Neck, ankle, hip, and knee joint pains have disappeared – they went away rapidly, before most of the weight loss – makes me think that the inflammation was due to diet more than wear and tear from carrying extra weight.
  • Acne and oily skin has decreased 95% – never this close to normal ever in my life.
  • Years of scaly, cracked feet have completely resolved spontaneously; a massage therapist accused me of having a pedicure and exfoliation and having the best feet she has seen on a 40 year old man – I had not done anything other than shower.
  • My shoe size has decreased – I was size 11eee or 12 all my adult life. Now I’m 11 regular.
  • Two golf ball size sebaceous cysts on my back spontaneously dissolved in a few weeks.
  • Triglycerides lowered from very high levels down to 50 now.
  • LDL and small LDL particle size falling from very high to normal.
  • HDL from 30s to the 60s with low amount of exercise.
  • Fasting glucose from high 90s (pre-diabetes) down to low 80s (normal).
  • I had elevated ALT and AST most of my adult life – now liver function tests are normal.
  • For over 15 years I had episodic gastric reflux, stomach distention and constipation – this has completely resolved.

The majority of my 100 pound weight loss occurred while I was not exercising at all. I started exercising recently in the fall of 2012 (AFTER most of my weight loss). Despite plateaus of staying at the same weight for many weeks at a time, I have continually decreased my clothing size each month – I continue to gain strength, vascularity and muscular definition.

Video: How A Low Carb Ketogenic Diet In Combination With Calorie And Protein Restriction Offers New Hope In Cancer Treatment

Published on July 10, 2013,

In a recent interview with Dr Mercola, leading cancer nutrition researcher Professor Thomas Seyfried discussed the benefits of a low carb, high fat, ketogenic diet for the treatment of cancer. Now Dr Mercola has published a follow-up interview with Dr Dominic D’Agostino, an assistant professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, looking at how a ketogenic diet combined with calorie restriction and hyperbaric treatment can offer new hope for a non-toxic cancer treatment…

The video cannot be shown at the moment. Please try again later.

Some interesting observations from Dr D’Agostino include…

- A ketogenic diet that restricts glucose from cancer cells will harm them whereas healthy cells will be able to switch to obtaining energy from ketone bodies (you starve the cancer cells)

- Calorie restriction in combination with a ketogenic diet appears to offer enhanced benefits – and the ketogenic diet  makes the calorie restriction much easier – if you are eating a high fat, low carb diet you don’t feel so hungry and therefore are likely to eat less

- Protein also should be restricted as too much makes it hard to deplete the glycogen stores from the liver

- The combination of a carbohydrate restricted ketogenic diet, calorie restriction and protein restriction optimises the degree and sustainability of nutritional ketosis and enhances the impact on cancer

Jimmy Moore: Unexpected Health Benefits of Nutritional Ketosis

Published on June 12, 2013,

We’ve featured Jimmy Moore’s experiment with nutritional ketosis several times over recent months. Bascially, he is trying to put his body into a state of being primarily fuelled by ketones through the use of a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb dietary approach. Jimmy has lost a lot of weight and now has an interesting article over at CarbSmart where he describes 10 unexpected benefits of nutritional ketosis beyond this weight loss itself. We’ve got the link below to see the full article but here are a few highlights…

1. Appetite and craving annihilation
Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I really like to eat. After all, I didn’t get to weigh over 400 pounds because I had fantastic control over my intake of food. Absolutely not! I’ve always had this insatiable hunger that never gave me a calm sense of satisfaction and control even on a straight low-carb diet (GASP!). It wasn’t until I consumed ENOUGH food, mostly from dietary fats (it’s probably even more than you think), keeping my absolute amount of protein to the level that is right for me (between 80-100g daily) and and kept carb intake within my own personal carb tolerance level (~30g daily) that I found freedom from the bondage of my never ending hunger for the first time in my life. There are some powerful prescription drugs on the market right now that don’t come close to the satisfaction and appetite suppression you will feel by properly nourishing your body this way.

2. Spontaneous fasting
What?! Did you seriously say fasting? As in, not eating ANY food at all for a period of time—ON PURPOSE? Yep, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Isn’t fasting the second-most vulgar “f” word in the English dictionary? When you are a sugar-burner living on glucose as your primary fuel source, there’s no doubt fasting is indeed a dirty word. But imagine my surprise when I started doing this nutritional ketosis experiment, becoming a fat-for-fuel, ketone-burning beast in earnest – and spontaneously started going 8, 12, 16 and even 24+ hours between meals.

Why oh why would I do something like this? Very simple—it was a natural reaction to giving my body what it needed. Fasting should not be a forced thing, waiting in agony and pining for your next meal. That’s pure torture! Try this—eat a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb meal. Make sure it is a hearty plate of food (you can’t get the amount of food wrong if you listen to your body telling you when you have had enough). If you keep the impact on your blood sugar and insulin levels minimal by eating the right mix of fat, protein and carbohydrates for your body, then you shouldn’t be surprised by how long you can go between meals. I regularly fast 18-24 hours and sometimes even as much as 30 hours when I feel good. I challenge you: Put it to the test. Keep in mind it might take you a few days or weeks to find that proper amount and mix of food that’s right for you. But when you do, you’ll be a lean mean fasting machine in very short order, and not even realize it. This is such a cool feeling!

3. Unbelievable mental sharpness
Don’t you just hate that brain fog that tends to overcome you at the worst possible times in your life? Man oh man, I sure do. It used to hit me really hard, especially in the afternoon, even after eating what I thought was a pretty decent low-carb meal. But ever since I started pursuing and being in a constant state of nutritional ketosis, this no longer happens to me. I have the most incredible mental acuity that I’ve ever experienced . If I had realized how much clearer my thinking could be by being fueled almost non-stop by ketone bodies instead of sugar, I would have made this switch a long time ago. I recently heard a lecture given by Nora Gedgaudas from PrimalBody-PrimalMind.com who said people who eat a ketogenic diet have 39% greater blood flow to the brain than those fueled by glucose. That’s HUGE and explains why brain function is optimized when you are in nutritional ketosis. You’ll never fully understand this key health benefit of NK until you experience it for yourself. Get your blood ketones above 1.0 millimolar on a consistent basis and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.
